Decline code 41: Lost Card

The cardholder reported this card lost, and the issuer has blocked it and marked it for capture. Any authorization on the number will be refused permanently. The legitimate customer has, or soon will have, a replacement card with a new number.

Should you retry?

Do not retry under any circumstances. Lost-card status is permanent for that number, the code sits in Visa's never-reattempt category, and continued attempts on a lost card look like fraud from the issuer's side of the wire.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lost card decline be reversed if the customer finds the card?
No. Once reported lost, the number is permanently blocked and a replacement is issued with new credentials. Even if the physical card is found, the old number stays dead. The customer must use the replacement card.
Should code 41 on my site worry me about fraud?
On a stored card in a billing cycle, no; the customer simply lost their card since you saved it. On a fresh checkout entry, yes; someone is typing in a card its owner reported lost, which merits fraud review of the session.
