Reason code 12.7: Invalid Data
The authorization was obtained using incorrect or invalid data, such as a wrong merchant category code, transaction type, country code, or other required field, and the issuer asserts it would have declined the transaction had the data been accurate. This code polices the integrity of what merchants send in authorization messages. It is the reason code most directly connected to miscoding and transaction-laundering enforcement.
Issuer filing window
120 days from the transaction processing date
Merchant response window
typically 20-30 days to respond, depending on the acquirer
Why 12.7 chargebacks happen
- The transaction was processed under an MCC that misrepresents the actual business, whether by acquirer setup error or deliberate miscoding to dodge issuer blocks.
- The country code in the authorization did not reflect where the merchant or transaction actually occurred, common in aggregation and offshore arrangements.
- A recurring transaction was flagged as a one-time purchase, or an ecommerce sale carried card-present indicators.
- Required fields for the transaction type, such as the electronic commerce indicator, were populated incorrectly by the gateway.
- Volume from an unapproved product line was routed through a MID underwritten for a different business.
How to fight a 12.7 chargeback
- Demonstrate that the authorization data was accurate: correct MCC for your registered business, correct transaction type indicators, and correct location data, using your acquirer's merchant profile as support.
- Ask the issuer, through your acquirer, to specify exactly which data element was invalid, then rebut that element specifically.
- If the gateway populated a field incorrectly on an otherwise legitimate sale, provide the true transaction facts and the gateway's correction, and argue the issuer's decline hypothesis does not hold.
- Show issuer approval history for identical, correctly coded transactions from your MID to counter the claim that accurate data would have produced a decline.
- Escalate internal fixes over representment when the data was genuinely wrong, because repeated 12.7 disputes invite scheme-level scrutiny that costs more than any single case.
How to prevent 12.7 chargebacks
- Confirm your MCC actually matches what you sell, and re-verify after any pivot in product line or offer structure.
- Flag recurring transactions as recurring, with correct initial and subsequent indicators for stored credential transactions.
- Validate ECI values and transaction-type fields in gateway configuration whenever you integrate a new processor.
- Never route unapproved products through a MID underwritten for something else, however tempting during a processing squeeze.
- Review authorization message samples with your acquirer periodically, especially after routing or gateway changes.
Frequently asked questions
- What kind of data makes a transaction eligible for a 12.7 dispute?
- Core authorization fields: merchant category code, transaction type and indicators, merchant country or location data, and similar required elements. The issuer's argument is that the inaccurate data deprived it of the chance to decline. A wrong MCC on a blocked category, such as gambling coded as retail, is the archetypal case.
- Can my processor's mistake cause 12.7 chargebacks?
- Yes. Acquirer boarding errors and gateway field mapping bugs produce invalid data without any merchant intent, for example an ecommerce transaction sent with card-present indicators. You still receive the dispute, so respond with the true transaction facts and get the configuration corrected. Documented processor fault also strengthens your position with the acquirer on fee reversals.
- Is 12.7 related to transaction laundering?
- It is the reason code most often adjacent to it. Transaction laundering means processing sales for an undisclosed business through another entity's MID, which inherently transmits false merchant data in authorizations. While Visa attacks laundering primarily through integrity programs and acquirer enforcement rather than chargebacks alone, recurring 12.7 activity on a MID is the kind of signal that starts those reviews. If your processing arrangement requires misdescribing what you sell, the arrangement is the problem.
