Reason code RM: Cardholder Disputes Quality of Goods or Services
The cardholder received the product or service but claims it was defective, damaged, counterfeit, or materially different from what was described at the time of sale. This is a merchandise-quality dispute, not a fraud claim, and it typically requires the cardholder to have attempted a resolution with the merchant first.

Why RM chargebacks happen
- The item arrived damaged in transit or with a manufacturing defect.
- Product photos or listings oversold the item and the delivered goods fell short of the description.
- A service was performed poorly or incompletely relative to what was contracted.
- The customer received a counterfeit or gray-market version of a branded product.
- Buyer's remorse dressed up as a quality complaint after the return window closed.
How to fight a RM chargeback
- Show that the goods matched the listing: submit the product description, specifications, and photos exactly as they appeared at purchase.
- Demonstrate the cardholder never attempted to resolve the issue with you, or refused a reasonable remedy you offered, with support ticket history.
- Provide quality control, inspection, or authenticity documentation for the shipped item, including serial numbers where applicable.
- Include your return policy as disclosed at checkout and evidence the customer bypassed it, especially if they never returned the goods.
- For services, supply the contract or scope of work alongside completion evidence such as photos, sign-offs, or deliverables.
- Point out if the customer continued using the product or service after the complaint, which undercuts a materially-defective claim.
How to prevent RM chargebacks
- Write product descriptions that match reality, and photograph the actual item rather than idealized renders.
- Add quality control inspection before shipment for categories with known defect rates.
- Package appropriately for the carrier and destination to reduce transit damage.
- Make your support channel prominent and resolve quality complaints fast, since a replacement or partial refund is cheaper than a chargeback.
- Document service work as you perform it so completion evidence exists before any dispute.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the customer have to return the product to win an RM dispute?
- Discover generally expects the cardholder to have attempted resolution, and keeping the goods while claiming they are worthless weakens their case. In your response, note whether the item was returned and cite your return policy. A customer who retained and used the product has a hard time sustaining a quality claim.
- How is RM different from RG?
- RG says nothing was received; RM says something was received but it was defective or not as described. The evidence differs accordingly: RG turns on delivery proof, while RM turns on your product description, quality documentation, and the resolution history with the customer.
- Can I win an RM chargeback over a subjective complaint like taste or fit?
- Often, yes. If the product delivered matches its published description and specifications, personal disappointment is not material misrepresentation. Submit the listing as it appeared at purchase and your disclosed return policy, and frame the complaint as a preference issue the policy already covers.
