Reason code F14: Missing Signature
F14 is raised when a cardmember denies a card-present charge and the merchant cannot produce a signed receipt or other proof the cardmember agreed to the sale. It is the companion code to F10: F10 attacks the missing card capture, while F14 attacks the missing cardmember consent.

Why F14 chargebacks happen
- Staff skipped the signature prompt to speed up the line, so no signed record exists for the disputed sale.
- The receipt was signed but the paper copy was lost, faded, or never digitized before the dispute arrived.
- A tip-adjusted or offline transaction completed without ever presenting a signature screen.
- Someone other than the cardmember used the card and the missing signature makes the denial impossible to rebut.
How to fight a F14 chargeback
- Send the signed receipt or the digital signature capture from your POS, with the transaction ID visible.
- If the sale was chip-read with no signature required under your terminal rules, document the entry mode and the no-signature-required program logic.
- Add supporting identity evidence such as loyalty account activity, ID checks, or CCTV stills from the time of purchase.
- Show a pattern of undisputed prior purchases by the same cardmember at your location to undercut the fraud claim.
How to prevent F14 chargebacks
- Capture signatures digitally so they are searchable by transaction ID instead of living in a shoebox of paper slips.
- Retain signature records for at least two years, since Amex disputes can arrive many months after the sale.
- Configure terminals to require a completed signature step before the batch closes on applicable transactions.
- Audit stores periodically for receipts missing signatures and coach the locations that generate them.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a signature still required for Amex card-present sales?
- Amex dropped signature requirements for most card-present transactions, but F14 still exists for cases where a signature or equivalent proof of participation was expected and is missing. Your terminal configuration and transaction type determine exposure.
- What if my POS only stored a photo of the receipt?
- A clear, legible image of the signed receipt is acceptable evidence. Illegible or cropped images are treated the same as no signature at all, so check quality before submitting.
